ELECTRONIC VIOLIN Review

My daughter was thrilled to see this toy. It's not as much like a real violin as I wanted but it makes a very nice toy. She's only 2 so it'll do for now. It has multiple songs and a holder which are both great. It' just on the small side. I can't say whether or not it's durable yet, as it hasn't been through any tough hits or falls. But it's size does make me uneasy about it breaking.

Cecilio CVN-Purple 4/4 (Full Size) Ebony Fitted Orchestra Purple Violin with Hard Case Review

Cecilio CVN-Purple 4/4 (Full Size) Ebony Fitted Orchestra Purple Violin with Hard Case
Average Reviews:

I personally was looking for a cheap violin that I could fiddle (no pun intended) around with - basically learning how to hold the thing, basic notes, how to tune/restring it, etc. I got my wish with this violin. It's obviously not too well-made, and the material feels cheap, but it should come as no surprise for the price.
It likes to go out of tune too easily, and the strings seem to break without much pressure applied, so be wary if you're buying this for someone who doesn't know the first thing about a violin and its care. Honestly, I see similar violins (if not the exact same one) elsewhere for half the price here, so take that into consideration as well.

Molinari 4/4 Size Student Violin Outfit (Wood Bow, Canvas Case) Review

Molinari 4/4 Size Student Violin Outfit (Wood Bow, Canvas Case)
Average Reviews:

The violin I received was in good shape, except for one minor scratch in the varnish on the back. But the wood itself wasn't damaged. The sound of the violin is very nice. If I had it to do over again, knowing what I know, I would buy this violin. The only genuine drawback was the low quality of the strings that came with the violin. Buy replacement string if you buy this violin.

Purchased this for my son who just started learning. Sounded kind of creaky for couple weeks, but, looks like it is working OK now. He likes to play the instrument for how it feels and likes sound quality (which is improving).

Cecilio CVN-600 Hand Oil Varnished Flamed with 1 Piece Back Professional Violin Review

Cecilio CVN-600 Hand Oil Varnished Flamed with 1 Piece Back Professional Violin
Average Reviews:

I bought this violin about 6 months ago from internet vendor. This is the worst violin I have ever tried. Nothing is true about this violin's description. First, wood smelled like they were just cut fresh, not aged at all. Varnish on wood is terrible for any stringed instrument. It has the worst furniture varnish consist of thick uneven coat of poorly applied polyurethane. Finger board is painted black and it is not even straight. Chin rest and peg are made out of plastic, not ebony. There were no ebony parts. They are either painted black or plastic. The bridge is not even maple. It is cut poorly and won't fit correctly. Pegs will slip and snap. Fine tuners will wobble too much. Then strings will break. If you want cheap violin, buy Suzuki or Klaus Mueller. At least they work like violin and sound like violin

OK, So I bought this for 5th grade orchestra. So I ordered it on the 5th, and it comes in a whole 6 days. Not only that, it came at at least 8 O'Clock. I spent my whole day waiting for it!!! So, then when I got it it what is in an outrages package, AS TALL AS ME. So 2 packages in one. SO we open it up and It's a GREAT CASE!!!! But 1 of the zippers were broken. I open the case and the violin it a dull, burnt brown color. I THOUGHT IT WAS SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE THE PICTURE HERE!!! So then, The rosin is not easy to handle I opent it up, and ITS USLESS. Then, THE BOW. OMG. So, Like I opened the case, I try to get the bow out. IT WAS STUCK IN THE TWISTY THINGYS, AND WHEN WE TRYED TO GET IT OFF, WE ENDED UP YANKING IT OFF. So yeah, 10 of the bow hairs are off and the bow looks all jacked up. NEXT IS THE SHOLDER REST. ITS HARD TO PUT ON, AND HARD TO TWIST. The next reason is that setting up the strings and bridge, it took my dad a whole 30 MINUETS. So, when I receve an extra bridge, its in a piece of HAND TORN PAPER. So now I'm stuck with it. It is an OK violin. I am an indermedite violinist. This would be good for a beginner also.I don't know if I would reccomend this to a friend.

Cremona SV-100 Premier Novice Violin, 1/32-Size Review

Cremona SV-100 Premier Novice Violin, 1/32-Size
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The little violin arrived promptly and in good order. The bridge was down, but it was intentionally packed that way. The sound post was still in place (usually it will be), so it was easy to set the bridge properly and tune the strings. (If the sound post is fallen, this is not a serious problem, but don't try to set it yourself, bring it to a violin repair professional.) The pegs worked well. One cannot expect a great tone from such a tiny instrument, but it is a real, playable violin. I have replaced the tinny Chinese strings with Pirastro's and that improves the sound and volume. No fine tuners were provided with the fiddle so I bought a set of Suzuki tuners from another source (they are very inexpensive) and put them on when I changed the strings. The violin came with a good case, and the bracket inside holds the bow securely.
I had only one problem, and that was with the bow. I rosined it for weeks and it simply would not hold rosin. This meant that it could not grip the strings properly but would slide around and produce only a faint tone. I thought maybe the bowhair was some sort of inferior synthetic; however, when I brought it to my local violin repairman, he assured me it was genuine horsehair, but quite dirty. On that basis, I think I understand what happened, and I will explain it because this problem is likely to be encountered by other parents.
Whether a bow is big or small, new bowhair never holds to the string. It needs rosin, and at the start, lots of it. A repair shop always has powdered rosin on hand, and when run through it, new hair quickly becomes fit for use. But at home you will likely have only a cake of rosin. In fact, the little violin comes with a cake of rosin. When you first open it, take a nail or a pin or an unbent paper clip and scratch the surface of the rosin with about 10 lines, then rosin the bow a lot until it will grip the strings securely. My mistake was that although I did rosin the bow quite a bit at first, it was not enough, and then another factor took over: to understand this, I need to cite another rule, which is that one should never touch the bow hair, because the oil from the skin makes it slip. Well, try explaining this to a very young child. My daughter would frequently pick up the bow by the hair. Perhaps if there had more rosin on it in the first place, the effect of this might not have been quite so severe. But the combination of not enough rosin and the child continually handling the hair had such a bad effect that it would not hold more rosin. Clearly this is not the fault of the Cremona Company.
I don't know if there is a perfect solution, but I suppose the best you can do is (a) make sure the bow is thoroughly rosined before the child ever tries it; and (b) always place the bow in the child's hand at the frog (bow grip), rather than letting her pick it up herself -- to the extent possible, and watch her like a hawk.
Another problem you are likely to encounter with a tiny violin is that the G string (the lowest string) is likely to "wow" (rapid fluctuation in pitch) as much as one full tone whenever you draw the bow across it. This is a physical/acoustical problem, even with strings specifically made for this size violin, and quite disconcerting. My replacements for the original Chinese strings were Pirastro "Piranito" for the upper three, and "Chromcor" for the G. The upper strings now sounded louder and better, but the G still had the bad fluctuation. I have since discovered that Pirastro now makes the "new formula" Tonica strings in 1/16-1/32 size, and I have reason to think they have tried to address this problem. I will report back when I've had a chance to try them.

eMedia My Violin Starter Pack for Kids (1/4 size) Review

eMedia My Violin Starter Pack for Kids (1/4 size)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We are very unhappy with the condition of the product we received and with the tone of the response to my complaint directly to the company which sent the item, Emedia Music. The violin arrived with the strings all off. There was no indication that assembly is required in Amazon's product information on the website. When I first spoke to a representative of the company, I was told that the dvd which comes with the violin explains everything about how to attach the strings. This would have been true for someone who was already quite knowledgable about these instruments, but certainly not for a "layman". And I should not be required to sit with a set of needle-nose pliers which EMedia's representative said I would need, and try to understand on the phone how to somehow get the strings back on. This is what the man from the company told me I would need to try next. At the very least, we feel an apology was in order from him, with the preferable response being instructions on shipping the entire thing back (at their expense, or Amazon's) for replacement/repairs.

We visited a local violin store, and they told us that the reason the strings were all off was because the bridge is the wrong size and was unable to support the strings. They also told us it would cost [...] for them to supply the correct bridge, and another [...] or so just to restring the instrument once we got the new bridge.

Meanwhile, our little daughter has yet to even get to try out her new violin that she was so excited about. She is becoming less excited...

Stentor 1542 4/4 Violin Review

Stentor 1542 4/4 Violin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this violin for my wife for Christmas as she has been wanting to learn the violin for years. Its hard to find fair reviews online but after some digging I was relatively confident in my purchase.
Overall I have to say this is a great value purchase for a mid-level violin for an adult to start on. Critiques below.
Sound - According to the instructor the violin has very good tone for its price range. He actually complemented the body, but said the strings are relatively poor and should be replaced. I imagine cheap strings are typical similar to low-mid guitars and you should always invest in the more expensive ones to maximize value.
Pegs - Never touching a violin before, I had problems with the pegs. You have to really jam them in there and twist to get them to set. They work, but it would be nice if they had a little more grip on them.
Case - The case is very good, hard molded and protects the violin effectively. This likely eliminates 99% of shipping damage that can occur with mailing this kind of equipment around. Case also has a humidity sensor, a cubby for accessories, and a locking hanger to secure the bow.
Bow - The bow works very well, no complaints.

Snark SN-2 All Instrument Clip-On Chromatic Tuner Review

Snark SN-2 All Instrument Clip-On Chromatic Tuner
Average Reviews:

After trying several clip-on tuners for my guitars, banjos, and mandolins, this is definitely the best I've ever used. It works very well on all three instruments. It's accurate, the lighted display is very visible with bright colors for flat, sharp, and right-on. The head of the display swivels easily in any direction for easy viewing. It also allows tuning by both vibration or sound. The red color of the tuner's exterior makes it easy to find in my gig bag but is not obnoxiously bright when placed on the headstock. It's so good I bought two. Delivery came in about two or three days by standard shipping.

This has been a great beginner violin. It's a great value with all the other included accessories as well. I have been enjoying the violin for several years and it's performed well for a beginner. I never played an instrument before buying this. I wasn't sure if I'd keep up with it so I wanted to spend as little money as possible. I was impressed when I inquired several professional violin instructors as to their evaluation of this violin. They said I chose very well. I would say it has a balanced sound but keep in mind that every violin has its own sound.

Christino Professional Violin Shoulder Rest, 4/4 Review

Christino Professional Violin Shoulder Rest, 4/4
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am sad to report that I was told that Christino no longer makes shoulder rests with collapsable legs due to a patent infringement issue. It is hard to believe that a hinged leg can be patentable -- multiple other brands have folding legs. You can see the original design at the moment in the photos on this listing. I already have two with the foldable legs as pictured. When I made a new order here, I was shipped one with the replacement design, which has non-folding legs with two screw holes to mount them with two choices for angles. One choice tilts the pad forward, one tilts it back. Neither of the angles fits me right, like the old design does. It's a real shame, because of all they were the most comfortable of the 3 kinds I've tried - a Bon Musica, and a Chinese Kun copy. By comfort, I mean, not just the immediate feeling, but I get no neck cramps after hours of use.
The new design means they won't fit in the large pocket of my violin case without unscrewing and removing the legs, a real hassle and invitation to lose parts.
The foam on my 2-year old Christino shoulder rest is getting a bit worn, so I may keep the new item for the parts, which I can attach onto the old folding legs.

Interested in violin but don't want to invest a lot just yet? Try out this full-size inexpensive instrument. I'm not an expert on violins but I do know you can get it in tune, keep it in tune, and play it as you would expect of any violin. I suspect for solo or professional use you are going to want something else.
I recommend this instrument to persons who think they might be interested in the violin, but are not ready to invest in a professional quality piece just yet.
